Atheism

Sorry John Safran, but I'm not too stupid to be an atheist. It's true I haven't read "A Brief History of Time," I've been too busy writing a thesis on relativistic quantum mechanics, so yes, I think I could give a pretty good explanation on why the Big Bang is better than genesis as an explanation of cosmic origins. More to the point though, Christians are stupid not because we just now have scientific explanations of nature which are better than biblical ones, but because we've always had competing religious explanations which are at least no worse.

This is a very, very strange argument. At best it is incomplete.

I might think that Howard's doing badly in the polls because of WorkChoices. Someone else might think that he's just been around too long, and the cumulation of his mistakes means that the country wants a change. These seem both (to me) pretty reasonable guesses. What you're saying is that at least one of me and my friend would be stupid to believe what we do.

You're right Dave, my argument as stated was a bit glib. What I meant was this: Anybody who wasn't brought up believing in the Nordic Gods (almost everyone in the world) thinks that this mythology is not how the world really is. Nobody needs evolution or 20th century cosmology to refute it, the religion is clearly an invention of humans; clear that is, to everybody not indoctrinated from a young age. If I were a Christian or Jewish traveler to Iceland in the middle ages I would have had no trouble identifying Nordic mythology as the fabrication it is. Indeed, 18th and 19th century Christian European imperialists were always quick to deride the religious beliefs of their conquered peoples as "superstition." These clearly wrong beliefs however, are objectively no more stupid than Christianity or Judaism, hence mere knowledge of them entitles a thoughtful person to Atheism as a philosophical position. Marco Polo does as much to convince me of atheism as Darwin or Einstein. A humanities student is allowed to be an atheist

I'm not sure you appreciate the depth and subtle nuance of my post.

Am I saying 'Christians smell, and they eat their own poo'? Am I saying 'Christians both smell and eat their own poo'?

Or maybe 'Christians smell and eat their own. Poo poo!'

One for the poets and philosophers.

Fitz, I'm trying to set you up with someone who may read this blog. Don't make this a more difficult task for me than it already is.

Just 'cause I can't talk purty-like like you and your high-falootin' friends is no excuse to talk to me like I was nothin'.

Fitz, what did Sam just say?

Let's not kid ourselves here. The only people reading these blogs are nerds from the maths department.
